Granados’s famous opera Goyescas, first performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1916, derives from the piano suite premiered in Paris two years previously. At the head of a BBC SO in top form and a handpicked cast, Josep Pons clearly much enjoyed conducting this sparkling new production in London: many scenes in the opera draw their inspiration directly from paintings by Goya, which listeners will also have the pleasure of finding in the booklet of this rare and precious album.
C’est en 1916 au Metropolitan Opera de New York qu’eut lieu la première du célèbre opéra de Granados, ce Goyescas directement issu de la suite pour piano qui avait été créée deux ans auparavant à Paris. À la tête d’un BBC SO en grande forme et d’une distribution idoine, Josep Pons a eu beaucoup de plaisir à monter à Londres cette nouvelle production qui brille de mille feux : de nombreuses scènes s’inspirent directement de plusieurs toiles de Goya, que l’on aura également grand plaisir à retrouver dans le livret de cet album aussi rare que précieux.
