The full score was located in the 1980:s and published in 1988. Sibelius wrote the quartet during his final term at the Helsinki Music Institute, where for four years he had been a pupil of Martin Wegelius. The work is among his first attempts to assert an individual style, independent of the Liszt-Wagnerian school which Wegelius championed.
