The six Op. 18 quartets, dating from between 1798 and 1800, are firmly rooted in the classical tradition, reflecting the language of Hummel, Stamitz and, of course, Mozart and Haydn. But Beethoven's own voice is powerfully present, pushing out the boundaries of form.
