This cantata by Trippett was written for Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears. Based on an extract from William Henry Hudson's autobiography 'Far away and long ago'. We are in Argentine in the middle of the 19th century, surrounded by exotic plants and fabulous birds. We are poised on the brink of adulthood, awereness intensified by jangling hormones. The originality of Trippett's choice of text is breathtaking. There has been nothing like it in English song before or since.
With English pianist Iain Burnside.
