Ravel became suitably deprecatory of the success of the 'Pavane pour une Infante défunte', one of the first works which drew him to the attention of a wide public. Though written for the piano, this is music that seemes to find its true space in the orchestra, the slightly heavy effect of the piano chordal accompaniment drifting into an Iberian dusk in the sound of harp and strings.
