Rihm's Musik für Oboe und Orchester, revised 2002. It is a work in one movement but with many sections, and one which pits the soloist against an expanded chamber orchestra consisiting of 24 musicians - a special ensemble without flutes, trumpets and violins; a piece which, starting over and over again from the lowest tone of the oboe, "low" B flat, rises to virtuoso heights in long run-ups in which the oboist is practically expected to risk his neck.
Fono Forum: outstanding.
