Andante

Donizetti blessed the oboe with the beautiful Andante for oboe and harp and a brightly virtuoso Sonata with piano accompaniment. Both works are like two exquisite aria d'opera, but without text - songs without words. The sonata's maunscript in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris has entries by Donizetti that suggest he may have originally thought of an orchestral accompaniment. Hence borth works were orchestrated for oboe and strings by Lajos Lencsés. The string orchestra is extremely accomplished - the sound is outstandingly pleasant and well-balanced (BBC Music Magazine).
