The most striking characteristics of Goldmark's string quartet are an untroubled self-indulgence in its harmony, the almost orchestral richness of sound and the dominance of the first violin, which excels in the coda of the opening movement and the final movement with its solo-cadence-like passages, as well as almost always 'having the first say' in the exposition of the themes.
