More than the head movement of any other string quartet the allego is marked by contrasting motifs. The second movement is designated as a romance, a narrative song that stirs the soul. The allegretto is not a scherzo but one of the intermezzi that Brahms liked t place before weighty final movements. The final movement is based on the sonata form albeit one in which Brahms was even able to enhance the 'polyphonic form concept' of the densest examples.
