Towards the end of the 19th century there was a very popular Gypsy band in the Galánta village, which Kodály must have heard often as a child. He became very fond of a book, published in Vienna in the early 1800:s, which was devoted to the Gypsy melodies and dances from Galánta. When in 1933 he was commissioned to write a work to mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Budapest Philharmonic Society, Kodály turned to this book as a guide and inspiration for this work. Outstanding: Classic CD.
