German conductor Peter Rundel (b. 1958) studied the violin under Igor Ozim and Ramy Shevelov in Cologne, Hanover and New York, as well as conducting under Michael Gielen and Peter Eötvös. From 1984 to 1996 he played the violin as a member of Ensemble Modern, making his conducting début in 1987. Peter Rundel appears regularly with orchestras such as the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and the WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, as well as with contemporary music ensembles such as Ensemble Recherche, Ensemble Modern, Asko Ensemble, Ensemble InterContemporain and musikFabrik. Recent collaborations also include the Orquesta Nacional de España, Orchestre National de Lille and Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi.
Peter Rundel has conducted music theatre productions at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Bavarian State Opera, the Volksoper Wien, at the Wiener Festwochen and the Bregenzer Festspiele, working with stage directors such as Peter Konwitschny, Philippe Arlaud, Joachim Schlömer and Reinhild Hoffmann. Since January 2005 he has been musical director of the Remix Ensemble Porto. Specializing in the field of contemporary music, Peter Rundel has also made highly praised recordings of works by composers such as Luigi Nono, Jean Barraqué, Heiner Goebbels and Steve Reich.
