This album features the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, one of Scandinavia's oldest, founded in 1905. It includes Jean Sibelius's tone poem "En Saga," originally composed as an octet for strings, flute, and clarinet. This piece, later revised in 1902, evolved through several stages, including a septet and a ballet scene, before becoming the tone poem known today. The inspiration behind "En Saga" includes the works of German artist Arnold Böcklin and the mystical elements in nature. Sibelius described it as an expression of the soul, reflecting his own harrowing experiences during its composition. The album also includes other works that showcase Sibelius's romantic inclinations and his fascination with historical themes.
