The work bears the character of a radiant Concerto Grosso (alongside the cello we find a group of twelve 'solo' instruments in the outer movements), but at the same time shows formal elements of the later classical instrumental concerto. From time to time these are illuminated by a mischievous humour. Outstanding: Gramophone.
