Eli Zion - from St. Petersburg to Jerusalem

Eli, Zion…« – »Weep and wail, o Zion and its cities ...« – are the first words of a lament that is sung on the Jewish day of
mourning known as Tish’a be-Av. On this day, both the first and second temple in Jerusalem were destroyed (586 B.C.E. and
70 C.E., respectively). Eli Zion was one of the most frequently played works of the New Jewish School of music from the 1910’s
to the 1930’s. During those years, the young composers who were members of this school developed for the first time in the
history of music a national style of art music integrating elements of Jewish folklore and synagogue music. This school was
closely linked to the Jewish cultural renaissance.
