Au cours des années 1920, tous les regards se tournent vers Berlin. Dans une énergie commune, des artistes de tous bords (écrivains, peintres, architectes, cinéastes, compositeurs...) y fondent les principes de cette “nouvelle objectivité” qui font d’elle l’essence même de la modernité, mais aussi l’écho des grandes villes du monde – New York en particulier, d’où provient le jazz. Pourtant la vie des berlinois n’est pas un roman : grève, misère, émigration, répression, montée du nazisme ; un contexte social d’après-guerre qui contribue à un engouement tout azimut pour le cabaret, soupape vitale où mœurs et critique sociale se libèrent.
