Chinese-American composer Chen Yi (b1953).
'Like other Chinese-born composers now living in the US, Chen Yi constantly brings her own issues of dual identity to bear on her music. But unlike those colleagues who have carried China with them successfully to the West, Chen's music seems to bring the West back to China.
A violinist by training, Chen spent much of the Cultural revolution playing in a provincial Beijing opera troupe in her native Guangzhou. Her later eductation at the Central Conservatory also stressed what we would call ethnomusicological fieldwork in minority cultures' (Gramophone).
