Arthur Butterworth



English composer Arthur Butterworth (b. 1923) turned to music (by way of the German sacred music) while serving with the British army in Flensburg in the north of Germany. Upon returning to his home-town Manchester he studied composition, trumpet playing and conducting. As a trumpeter he played in the Scottish National Orchestra between 1949 and 1955 och thereafter, until 1962, with the Hallé Orchestra. He made is debut as a composer with his First Symphony in 1957. In 1955 he was awarded an MBE. Butterworth's brass band works are very popular and are performed worldwide.
