What did the life of nuns behind medieval convent walls look like? In Veiled Desires, ensemble Peregrina and Agnieszka Budzi?ska-Bennett consider various aspects of this monastic life that was isolated from worldly pleasures. With clear voices, they sing the praise of virginity and of its curse (in the specific form of the nun’s lament), the experience of communal living, and the impressive laments for a deceased sister. Yet alongside these rather chaste songs, ensemble Peregrina has likewise selected satirical and amusing songs that tell of the nuns’ rebelliousness – from an erotic dialogue between a nun and a monk up to an abbess entangled in a love affair. A tongue-in-cheek program with flawless singing from the context of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, accompanied by Baptiste Romain (vielle) and Marc Lewon (lute, gusli). Entertainment at its best!
