Haendel, Ida
Ida Haendel
Polish/British violinist Ida Haendel (b. 1928).
A legendary violinist. Born to Jewish parents near Lublin in Poland. Her birth date cannot be exactly dated, since at her debut in England she claimed to be older than she was in order to evade child labor laws. The family moved to England shortly before Hitlertattacked Poland and she became a British citizen in 1940. In 1991 she was appointed 'Commander of the British Empire'.
In 1952 Haendel moved to Canada and in 1979 she settled in Miami. Florida. No other violinist has ever enjoyed such a long, successful stage career.
