Wilhelm Backhaus

German pianist Wilhelm Backhaus (1884-1969). Masterful, multi-faceted and nuanced interpretations characterize the recordings of Wilhelm Backhaus, one of the greatest pianists. He was the last exponent of the Leipzig tradition of pianism, called the 'Lion of the keyboard'. He said himself: 'The simpler it is, the more beautiful it will become'. In 1930 he moved to Lugano and became a Swiss citizen.
