Four young Swedish musicians formed the Yggdrasil Quartet in 1990 after studying at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. They rapidly gained an international reputation as prizewinners in both the London International String Quartet Competition and the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. In 1995 a four-year project was created by the University of Aberdeen and the Scottish Arts Council for a quartet to live and perform in Aberdeen for several months each season. The Yggdrasil quartet was selected after immense international competition and immediately created a sensation. Meanwhile the Stockholm Concert Hall chose the quartet as Sweden's 'Rising Stars' and in 1997 the quartet performed in major concert halls throughout Europe. Members: Fredrik Paulsson and Per Öman, violin, Robert Westlund, viola and Per Nyström, cello.
