In 1891, Grieg planned a further String Quartet. By now he was one of the most famous of élite composers and enjoyed great success wherever he appeared. He was swamped with invitations. On 26th March Grieg wrote from Copenhagen that he had already completed two movements of a string quartet. On Christmas Day 1895 he wrote of 'the wretched string quartet, which continues to lie there unfinished, like an old Norwegian cheese'. Unfortunately, this state of affairs was to remain unchanged until Grieg's death in 1907. Outstanding: Fono Forum.
