Follow RAUMKLANG to Leipzig’s Gewandhaus ca. 1840: Women in rustling gowns and men in tail coats have come to the “Musikalische Morgenunterhaltung” (Musical Matinee) and listen intently to a varied program with works by Mendelssohn, Schumann, Clara Wieck, Bernhard Heinrich Romberg, and others. Yet not only is the selection of pieces extremely diverse on this Sunday, but also the choice of instruments. To be heard alongside pianoforte, strings, lyre-guitar, clarinet, voice, flute, and glass harmonica are small curiosities such as a czakan (a “walking-stick” flute) and an orphica, a small portable piano that can be played while out and about, and that is eminently suitable for song accompaniment.
Many of these original instruments from the Romantic period are to be found today in the collection of Leipzig’s Museum of Musical Instruments. Now they can be heard on RAUMKLANG’s spring release, which offers an impression of the Sunday matinees as they could have taken place in Mendelssohn’s time. First-class Sunday entertainment!
