Has Easter ever changed the world or made it a better place? As things stand, the answer is no: the prospect of grace and eternal life remains a clouded sun in the dark sky of the real world. Cantata BWV 6, despite the work's Easter message of salvation, is a stark warning of impending doom, combined with a heartfelt plea not to be abandoned by God. In this deeply moving piece of music and contemplation, Bach creates a comforting atmosphere of humility and serenity, where wailing and gnashing of teeth would not be out of place.
