At the turn of the 17th century, Italian music as a whole embarked on a new path, that of the ‘seconda prattica’. The madrigals of Monteverdi were the driving force of this development, especially those of the seventh and eighth books from which the works on this CD are taken. Au tournant du XVIIe siècle, la musique italienne tout entière s'engageait sur une voie nouvelle, celle de la “seconda prattica”. Les madrigaux de Monteverdi furent les moteurs de cette évolution, tout particulièrement ceux des VIIe et VIIIe Livres dont sont tirées les pièces présentées sur ce disque. Parmi elles, le célèbre Lamento della Ninfa et d'autres chants à découvrir ou à redécouvrir sous la direction de William Christie.

Monteverdis Madrigale waren der Motor dieser Entwicklung, vor allem diejenigen aus dem siebten und achten Madrigalbuch, aus dem die Stücke auf dieser CD entnommen sind. Unter ihnen befindet sich das berühmte Lamento della Ninfa und andere Gesänge, die unter der Leitung von William Christie zu entdecken – oder wiederzuentdecken – sind.
