This predominantly orchestral composer, who became famous with his opera Jephté ‒ which made a deep impression on Rameau ‒, wrote no fewer than twenty-five cantatas of remarkable interest, five of which may be heard on this record.

Entre le classicisme hérité du Grand Siècle et l'influence marquée du modèle italien, la cantate eut toutes ses faveurs : ce musicien d'orchestre devenu célèbre grâce à son opéra Jephté ‒ qui impressionna tant Rameau ‒ lui consacra pas moins de vingt-quatre œuvres de valeur, parmi lesquelles les cinq présentées sur ce disque.
