Composés l'année même de sa mort, ils offrent le meilleur de la production sacrée de ce compositeur "trop porté sur les morts"... selon Berlioz ! Mais le plus romantique des adorateurs de Bach avait plus d'un tour dans son sac, et ce serait une erreur que de sous-estimer ces extraordinaires psaumes et motets que Mendelssohn ne cessa de produire tout au long de sa vie, en dépit de rapports plutôt tendus avec l'authorité ecclésiastique.
