Zwischen der Entführung aus dem Serail und der berühmten „Da-Ponte-Trilogie" war Mozart fieberhaft auf der Suche nach guten Libretti, die das Publikum in noch unbekannte Sphären zu versetzen vermögen, indem die Dramaturgie und die Psyche der handelnden Personen durch die Musik eine Sublimierung erfahren. So zeigt sich Mozart in den Jahren 1782-86 überaus experimentierfreudig, was sich in Konzertarien, verschiedenen Entwürfen und Stilübungen wie etwa Kanons äußert. Dieses musikalische Material ist hier in einem fiktiven Dramma giocoso in drei Szenen versammelt, von denen jede auf ihre Art die kompositorischen Höhepunkte Figaro, Don Giovanni und Così erahnen lässt
