While Dvořák’s Sixth Symphony is clearly inspired by the Symphony no.2 of his friend and champion Johannes Brahms, its middle movements persuasively reinterpret the Slavonic tradition. The Suite op.98, commissioned from Dvořák when he was director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York, is an exotic patchwork of Amerindian and Afro-American music – with a pronounced Bohemian accent. It is only much more recently that it acquired the nickname ‘American’.
Si Dvořák, pour sa 6e Symphonie, s'est clairement inspiré de la Symphonie n°2 de son ami et protecteur Johannes Brahms, il y met en valeur de façon convaincante, dans les mouvements centraux, la tradition slave. La Suite op.98, œuvre de commande à Dvořák – alors directeur du Conservatoire National de Musique de New York – est un patchwork exotique de musique indienne et afro-américaine... aux accents de Bohême. On lui donnera beaucoup plus tard le surnom de "Suite américaine".
Wenn Dvořáks 6. Sinfonie (1880) klar von der 2. Sinfonie seines grossen Freundes und Förderers Johannes Brahms inspiriert ist, kommt in ihren Mittelsätzen die slawische Tradition überzeugend zur Geltung.
