Incidental music to Shakespeare's play 'The Tempest'. The first version of the work consisted of 34 numbers for soloists, mixed choir, harmonium and orchestra, from which Sibelius then arranged a prelude and two concert suites with 18 numbers in all. The musical programme - not including the prelude - is concerned more with the psychological aspects of Shakespeare's characters and with setting the mood for the various scenes.
