Sinfonia (Overtura) - Allegro molto

Only fragments of the complete opera survive. This energetic overture is really a genuine little symphony in three tiny movements, and it has always enjoyed a separate existence, away from the opera itself. It has all the virtues of Haydn's early style: propulsive rhythm, a firm sense of direction, very effective use of a small orchestra, and formal compactness.
