Mahler's Seventh Symphony, though certainly not as misunderstood or 'unpopular' as it used to be, still often finds itself the object of bewilderment, particularly among those who belive that only music expressive of tragedy or misery has true depth, and that happy endings can only be achieved after colossal struggles with despair, horror, doubt, and suffering. Mahler's Seventh not only repudiates this point of view, it mocks it, gleefully and unapologetically, and for this it has never quite been forgiven.
