Prélude

This work bears a dedication to a lost friend. As ever, Ravel objectively sublimates his personal grief into a glistening work of art, at once ancient and wholly up-to-date, witty and enormously deeply felt, surmounting his despair at the death of his beloved mother (also in 1917) as well as the atrocious chaos of war.
