Beethoven: Sonata for piano No. 29, 'Hammerklavier'. Beethoven intentionally conceived this sonata as his 'greatest' and seems to have piled up the technical difficulties with a certain relish. The title, 'Hammerklavier' has no particular meaning since the composer came up with it simply by Germanizing the term 'pianoforte'.
