This album is a collection of famous pieces that were played in the salons of kings and aristocrats during the heyday of the French absolute monarchy.
17th century French music developed mainly in the royal court. Court musicians created dances in a sophisticated style, and this art form captivated even Louis XIV, known as the Sun King. Instruments to play these pieces also developed, and France in particular produced many virtuoso wind instrument makers. This album contains masterpieces by such virtuoso musicians. Although the names are not necessarily well known even today, the beauty and enjoyment of the pieces are worth listening to.
