This album presents three sacred cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach: Christ lag in Todesbanden (BWV 4), Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich (BWV 150), and Der Herr denket an uns (BWV 196), performed by the Bach Collegium Japan under the direction of Masaaki Suzuki.
Christ lag in Todesbanden is one of Bach’s earliest and most well-known Easter cantatas. Based on Martin Luther’s hymn, it reflects the transition from suffering to resurrection, with each movement structured around the chorale melody. The work’s symmetry and dramatic contrast highlight Bach’s deep theological and musical insight.
Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich, possibly one of Bach’s earliest surviving cantatas, is based on Psalm 25 and explores themes of faith and perseverance through expressive chromaticism and a striking chaconne in the final chorus. The cantata’s structure and counterpoint foreshadow Bach’s later mastery in choral writing.
Der Herr denket an uns, likely composed for a wedding ceremony, is a short but beautifully crafted work that expresses divine blessing and joy. Its serene harmonies and elegant fugues reflect Bach’s early stylistic development and mastery of sacred music.
This recording showcases the historically informed performance practice of the Bach Collegium Japan, bringing clarity and authenticity to these timeless masterpieces.
