Penguin Guide 3 stars.

This album features the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Ole Kristian Ruud, presenting the world premiere recordings of Nino Rota's Symphony No. 1 in G major and Symphony No. 2 in F major. Symphony No. 1, composed between 1935 and 1939, marked Rota's first mature work, debuting to critical acclaim in Venice but falling into obscurity during World War II. Its four movements showcase Rota's vibrant Italian melodies and the influence of Alfredo Casella. Symphony No. 2, completed sporadically from 1937 to 1975, reflects Rota's experiences in southern Italy and the United States, blending Italian themes with cinematic elements. This album captures the unique blend of classical form and expressive candor in Rota's early symphonic works.
