MacMillan: Symphony No. 2. The symphony is built on a piano sonata which MacMillan wrote in 1985. The sonata's bone structure would come to serve as the foundation. The symphony builds around this skeletal blueprint, fleshing it out, expanding and adding to it - the original sonata is remoulded beyond recognition.
