Nystroem had come into contact with the polar explorer Roald Amundsen and the Greelnand explorer Knud Rasmussen in Copenhagen in the summer of 1917; in consequence he took part in an expedition to Spetsbergen and the coast of Greenland. This journey was a major source of inspiration for this symphonic poem. Dedicated to Amundsen.
