For chansonnier and orchestra to texts by H.C. Artmann, chansonnier is the composer HK Gruber himself. Artmann's humour, which Gruber sharpens through the medium of song and illuminates with painstaking accuracy, is just as bizarre as everything else that we call 'absurd' because it horrifies us. Our fear of the 'mood of the time' (Stimmung der Zeit) is written inte each of the thirteen texts. Gruber has, therefore, composed serious music. The cycle is based on a single twelve-tone series.
