Charivari, An Austrian Journal for Orchestra, preceded by Strauss's 'Perpetuum Mobile' (time 2'44). Gruber's piece begins the same way that Strauss's ends: with the ostinato theme. The subtitle relates to its allusions to Austrian history and especially to the sometimes casual attitude that the Austrians take to it. The Charivari is a reference by Gruber to a folk custom: social misfits, those who break the taboos, were branded by their fellow villagers by means of a cacophony of sounds from kitchen utensils and other everyday objects outside their houses - the mass against the individual.
International Record Review: outstanding.
