The first of Beethoven's sonatas that earned itself a nickname in the 19th century - it as known as 'Die Verliebte' (The Girl in Love). Also the first sonata dedicated to a lady, for Countess Barbara Keglevics, one of the many aristocratic young ladies to whom he gave piano lessons. Most importantly, the first sonata that can be heard as a musical personality with a unique character.
