Unsuk Chin's music opens a doorway to a wondrous universe where fresh perspectives continually emerge. Her compositions are a tapestry of unique sounds and intricate structures, interspersed with moments of sheer, otherworldly beauty. As an orchestra, we find navigating her musical landscape both challenging and rewarding. Chin's compositions push the boundaries of our performance skills, allowing us to showcase our strengths and adaptability. Her creative flair is a testament to the vibrant energy of contemporary music, making her one of the most engaging composers we have had the privilege to work with extensively.
Since 2005, our collaboration with Chin has yielded a remarkable series of solo concertos and orchestral works, as showcased in this edition. Some performances are etched in our memory due to their extraordinary contexts. For instance, the Piano Concerto featuring Sunwook Kim, conducted by Sakari Oramo, marked our return to live performances post-pandemic, an unforgettable moment of reconnection with our audience. Another highlight was our last Asian tour under Sir Simon Rattle, where we performed Chorós Chordón – a piece commissioned by the Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation. This piece was particularly memorable for its harmonious blend of Eastern and Western influences, performed across China, Korea, and Japan.
Unsuk Chin's global perspective transcends her identity as a Korean resident in Berlin. Her work reflects a vast array of cultural and intellectual influences, from ancient mythology to modern cosmology. These diverse interests are woven into her music, making every encounter with her compositions an exhilarating journey. We are thrilled to share these adventures with our audience through this edition.
