The most recent Raumklang CD with the Moscow-based Ensemble Labyrinthus presents two very special musical genres of the Middle Ages: first, the rondelli – catchy dance melodies that, provided with sacred texts, were sung and danced both within as well as outside the church; second, the ornate polyphonic conducti that were written down in Swiss monasteries (including the Benedictine Abbey Engelberg and the Abbey of St. Gallen).
Some of the pieces are unique and are found only in these Swiss sources. Others, such as the popular Parisian melodies, are also known from other manuscripts. With this compilation of religious dances, Ensemble Labyrinth has put together a sonorous and, at the same time, entertaining program that allows a wonderful glance into the wealth of vocal music of the Middle Ages.
