From Leipzig to Naples.
Two of Bach’s finest cantatas, both for solo alto, composed in Weimar (1714) and Leipzig (1726) respectively, are here coupled with Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater of 1736, the eighteenth century’s favourite sacred work. The gap between austere Lutheran piety and searing Mediterranean emotionalism might seem unbridgeable. Yet Bach so admired the composition of his Neapolitan colleague that he made his own ‘parody’ of it to a German text. On this recording, La Nuova Musica and its two eminent soloists display equal mastery of both idioms.
De Leipzig à Naples.
Ce disque associe deux des plus belles cantates de Bach, composées pour alto solo à Weimar (1714) et Leipzig (1726) respectivement, au Stabat Mater de Pergolèse (1736), l’œuvre sacrée préférée du XVIIIe siècle. Entre austère piété luthérienne et fulgurante émotivité méditerranéenne, le gouffre peut sembler infranchissable. Pourtant, Bach admirait tant le travail de son collègue napolitain qu’il en a réalisé une « parodie » sur un texte allemand. La Nuova Musica et ses deux illustres solistes font preuve ici d’une même maîtrise des deux styles.
