YEVGENY SUDBIN
The son of two pianists, Yevgeny Sudbin entered the specialist music school of the St Petersburg Conservatory at the age of seven, and won his first international competition only two years later. Leaving the Soviet Union with his family in the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Sudbin in 1997 ended up in London, studying there at the Royal Academy of Music. When making his début recording in 2005, he decided on an all-Scarlatti programme which caused reviewers to compare the 25-year old to Horowitz and Pletnev, and by the time his second disc – a Rachmaninov recital – was released, he was being described as ‘one of the most important pianistic talents of our time’ (International Record Review). Since then his career as concert and recording artist has rocketed, and he continues to impress reviewers and audiences with his ‘inquiring mind, unflappable fingers, and huge heart’ (classicstoday.com). Sudbin’s latest recording (released in October 2012) is an imaginative recital with the three-stranded theme of ‘Love, Delirium and Death’, combining works by Liszt, Ravel and Saint-Saëns. Soon to be released is his performance of Rachmaninov’s First Piano Concerto, following up on his acclaimed recording of the same composer’s Paganini Variations from the spring of 2012. read more
