ROLAND PÖNTINEN
Appearing on some seventy titles in our catalogue, Roland Pöntinen is a true BIS stalwart – and has been for close to 30 years by now. An expert chamber musician, he appears with musicians such as the clarinettist Martin Fröst, the cellist Torleif Thedéen and the trumpet player Håkan Hardenberger, but he has also made recordings as soloist with orchestra in works by composers such as Scriabin and Schnittke, Grieg and Tchaikovsky. Among Pöntinen’s many recital discs are those dedicated to a single composer such as Szymanowski, Chopin or Satie, but also imaginatively constructed mixed programmes, for instance on Pianorama, with music used by Bergman, Kubrick, Fellini and other film directors. Roland Pöntinen’s latest release on BIS is a recording with violinist Ulf Wallin of Robert Schumann’s three violin sonatas, with what one reviewer described as ‘spectacular performances’ that ‘belong in the library of any Schumann lover’ (Fanfare). read more
